The question behind every version of "Turkey in October" is the same: is it still warm? The honest answer is that it depends which Turkey you mean. The Mediterranean coast is still a beach holiday deep into November. Cappadocia is at its best in October and turns sharp and cold by the end of November. Istanbul swaps heat for good walking weather and a run of big city days. This guide takes the four regions people actually choose between, gives typical temperatures for each month rather than a single national number, and ends with the practical things that catch autumn travellers out — the clocks, the daylight and what to pack.
Four Turkeys in one season
Typical conditions, not forecasts — check the week before you fly. Sea temperatures are the ones that decide most autumn trips, so they get their own column.
| Region | October | November | Sea | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Antalya and the Mediterranean coast | Highs around 27°C, warm evenings, almost no rain | Highs around 21°C, first rainy days, still mild | About 25°C in October, still above 20°C through most of November | A beach holiday without the August heat |
| The Aegean: Bodrum, Çeşme, Ephesus | Highs of 24–26°C, cooler nights, grape harvest | Highs around 19°C, rain arrives, ruins to yourself | 22–23°C in October, cooling fast in November | Ancient sites and coast without the crowds |
| Cappadocia | Highs of 17–22°C, nights of 5–9°C, golden valleys | Highs of 10–15°C, nights near freezing | — | Balloon mornings and photography |
| Istanbul | Highs around 20°C, dry spells, long light | Highs around 15°C, rain, short days | Too cool for most; the Bosphorus is for looking at | Museums, food, Republic Day and the marathon |
| The Black Sea plateaus: Trabzon, Rize | Highs around 18°C, showers, autumn colour on the high ground | Highs around 14°C, wet, first snow on the passes | — | Forests, tea country and mountain villages in colour |
One pattern runs through the table: October is autumn's summer, November is its winter. Almost everything below is more enjoyable in the first of the two months, and almost everything is cheaper and emptier in the second.
The Mediterranean coast in October and November
Antalya is where "Turkey in October" earns its reputation. Daytime highs sit around 27°C, the sea is about 25°C — warmer than it was in June — and the sky stays clear almost every day. Belek, Side, Kemer and Alanya all run their full beach season into the last week of the month, and the resort hotels are quieter and noticeably cheaper than in August.

The month has one crowded week. English schools break for half term on 26–30 October, and German states stagger their autumn holidays between early October and the first week of November, so the big family resorts fill again briefly. Book the airport transfer with the flights that week rather than on arrival; the pickup queues at Antalya Airport are the one thing that still feels like high season.
November is the honest question. Yes, you can still swim: the sea is slower to cool than the air, and most of the month it stays above 20°C. But the afternoons shorten, the first proper rain arrives, and from the middle of the month some beach clubs and boat trips stop for the season. Come in November for a warm, quiet, cheap fortnight — not for a guaranteed poolside week.
Getting there is the easy part. Antalya Airport is served year-round, and a fixed-price transfer to a Belek or Side hotel costs the same in November as it does in July — from €47 per vehicle to Belek, driver waiting in arrivals.

The Aegean: ruins without the heat
Ephesus in July is a marble oven; Ephesus in October is a pleasure. Daytime highs on the Aegean coast fall to 24–26°C, which is exactly the temperature for walking an ancient city, and the tour-bus crowds thin week by week. Şirince, the hill village above Selçuk, harvests its grapes in early autumn and the fruit-wine season is in full swing.

The sea takes longer to give up. Bodrum and Çeşme are still swimmable through October at 22–23°C, the beach clubs stay open until the end of the month, and the yacht harbours are calmer than in August. By November the Aegean is a different place — rain, wind, and villages that have shut their summer shutters — so treat the region as an October destination and go inland for November.
Two airports serve the region: İzmir for Ephesus, Şirince and Çeşme, Bodrum-Milas for the peninsula. Neither has a rail link to the resorts; a fixed-price private transfer from İzmir Airport to Selçuk starts at €72 per vehicle, from Bodrum Airport to Bodrum town at €62.

Cappadocia: the best month of the year, then the cold
If one region belongs to autumn, it is Cappadocia. The balloons that fill the sky at dawn need calm, stable air, and October is the month they get it most often — operators report roughly nine mornings in ten flying, against a much poorer record in the windy spring. The poplars along the valleys turn yellow, the vineyards around Ürgüp go red, and the light on the rock is low and warm all day.
Pack for two climates. Daytime highs in October are a pleasant 17–22°C; the balloon launch site at six in the morning is 5–9°C, colder in the basket. A proper jacket, a hat and closed shoes turn a shivering flight into a memorable one.
November changes the arithmetic. Highs drop to 10–15°C, nights touch freezing, and about one morning in five is grounded by wind or fog. Flights still go most days, the crowds are gone and cave hotels drop their prices — but if the balloon is the reason for the trip, October is the safer bet, and a two-night stay gives you a second chance either month.
Both airports are a short drive from the villages: Nevşehir Kapadokya at about forty minutes, Kayseri at a little over an hour. A fixed-price transfer to a Göreme cave hotel starts at €56 per vehicle from Nevşehir and €86 from Kayseri — and after a dawn flight and a long day, a driver already waiting is the right way to end it.

Istanbul: Republic Day, the marathon and the light
Istanbul in October is the city at its most walkable: highs around 20°C, long dry spells, and the summer haze gone from the Bosphorus. The queues at Hagia Sophia and Topkapı shrink to something reasonable, ferry decks are comfortable again, and the terrace restaurants stay open into the evening.
The calendar matters more here than anywhere else. 29 October is Republic Day, the national holiday — parades on the European shore, fireworks over the Bosphorus at night, and road closures around Vatan Avenue and the waterfront. Three days later, on 1 November, the Istanbul Marathon closes the 15 July Martyrs' Bridge and the coast roads for a morning as tens of thousands of runners cross from Asia to Europe. Both are worth planning around: brilliant to see, awkward to drive through.
November brings rain and short days — sunset around half past five by the end of the month — but also the best museum weather and hotel prices of the year. A fixed-price transfer from Istanbul Airport to Taksim is €46.99 per vehicle whatever the weather, which on a wet November evening is worth more than it is in June.

The Black Sea plateaus: the autumn nobody expects
Turkey's north is the surprise autumn destination. The high plateaus behind Trabzon and Rize — Ayder, Uzungöl, the villages above the tea terraces — turn red and gold in the second half of October, the mountain guesthouses light their stoves, and the mist that hangs in the valleys is exactly what the region looks like in photographs. Arabic-speaking visitors have known this for years; October is one of the region's busiest months.

It is wet. Expect showers most days, mud on the plateau tracks and the first snow on the high passes in November. The reward is a landscape that has nothing in common with the Mediterranean, two hours' drive from Trabzon Airport: a fixed-price transfer to Ayder starts at €154 per vehicle, and the driver knows which mountain road is open that week.

Clocks, daylight and what to pack
Turkey does not change its clocks. The country stays on UTC+3 all year, while the United Kingdom and the rest of Europe put their clocks back on the last Sunday of October. From that morning the time difference grows by an hour: three hours ahead of London, two ahead of Berlin, Paris and Rome. Flight times are printed in local time, so nothing moves — but a video call home does.
Daylight shortens quickly. In Istanbul the sun sets a little before seven at the start of October and around half past five by late November — later than most of Europe, because the country keeps summer time all year. Plan the long drives — airport to Cappadocia's villages, airport to the Black Sea plateaus — for daylight where you can, and let the transfer company track your flight if you land after dark.
Packing is a question of region. The coast wants summer clothes and one warm layer for the evening. Cappadocia wants a real jacket, a hat and gloves for the balloon morning. Istanbul and the Black Sea want a rain shell and shoes that do not mind getting wet. Everywhere, November is one layer warmer than October.
Choosing your autumn
Four trips, four different regions — and the choice is easier than the table makes it look.
- 1
A beach holiday in October: Antalya. Warmest sea, driest sky, fixed transfer prices to every resort. Avoid the half-term week if you can, or book the transfer with the flights if you cannot.
- 2
Ancient sites and coast without the heat: the Aegean in October. Ephesus, Şirince and Bodrum at walking temperatures, with the sea still open. Do not push it into November.
- 3
The balloon morning: Cappadocia in October, two nights minimum. November works if you accept a one-in-five chance of a grounded flight and pack for frost.
- 4
A city break with something happening: Istanbul over Republic Day or marathon weekend, then museum weather in November at the lowest hotel prices of the year.
Whichever region wins, the airport transfer is the one part that does not change with the season: a fixed price per vehicle, agreed before you land, a driver waiting at the airport meeting point, and free cancellation up to 12 hours before pickup.
