Best Nature Day Trips from Istanbul 2026

Belgrade Forest · Polonezköy · Sapanca · Abant · Ağva — five green escapes, how far each really is, and how to get there

5 escapes · 5 clips
The distances are honest — Abant is a genuine 270 km push east of the city.

Istanbul is one of the world's densest metropolises, but within 40 minutes to 3 hours of the centre lie forests, mountain lakes and river villages that feel utterly removed from it. Here are the best nature day trips from Istanbul — what each one is actually like, and how to get there.

Belgrade Forest

Forest · 24 km north · 37–65 min

5,500 haof free forest

Watch & read

Belgrat Ormanıis Istanbul's largest green lung — 5,500 hectares of oak, hornbeam and pine in the hills above the Black Sea shore. The Byzantines, Ottomans and early Republicans all drew water from the forest's reservoir system, and the 16th–19th century stone dams and aqueducts are beautiful in their own right.

The most popular route is the Büyük Bent circular walk — 5 km around the main reservoir, well-marked, through ancient oak stands. Spring is exceptional: wild orchids and lily of the valley flower between April and early June, and on a weekday morning you may walk an hour without seeing another soul.

The dolmuş from Hacıosman metro takes about 40 minutes and is fine on the way out — the harder part is flagging one down at dusk. A private transfer is door-to-door from any hotel, and the driver comes back exactly when you say.

The city's free back garden

A local guide's look at Belgrad Ormanı the way Istanbullus actually use it — picnic tables under the oaks, reservoir paths, no entry fee. Thirty seconds tells you whether this is your kind of morning.

Polonezköy

Natural park · 28 km northeast · 26–45 min

1842founded by Polish exiles

Watch & read

Polonezköy (Adampol) was founded in 1842 by Polish exiles, and it still keeps its Central European character — wooden houses, orchard gardens, a Catholic church, and more horses than cars. The whole village sits inside a Natural Park in the Asian-side forest belt.

It's the perfect half-day: a stroll through the village, lunch at one of the çiftlik farmhouse restaurants, and a forest walk to close. Very popular with Istanbul families on spring weekends — a weekday visit gets you the village almost to yourself.

Sapanca Lake

Lake · 133 km east · 75–125 min

Apr–Octlakeside season

Watch & read

Sapanca is the easy option: a turquoise lake 133 km east down the motorway, ringed by mountains, with waterfront cafés, kayak and pedalo rental, and long lakeside lunches. Nothing here demands effort — that is the point of it.

It also pairs naturally with Abant: the two share the same E80 corridor east, so an early start lets you do the Sapanca waterfront and the Abant forest loop in one long, satisfying day.

The lake at the end of the motorway

The turquoise sweep of Sapanca from a drone, mountains behind and the café shore in front. This is the gentlest day trip on the list, and the clip shows exactly why.

Abant Lake

National park · 268 km east (Bolu) · 2.5–3 h

1,328 maltitude — 10–15°C cooler

Watch & read

At 1,328 metres, Abant Lake is a genuine mountain escape — a crater-bowl lake wrapped in dense beech and pine. In late spring the meadows are carpeted with wildflowers, and the air runs 10–15°C cooler than Istanbul: blissful on a hot June day.

The 6 km circular trail around the lake takes 1.5–2 hours at a comfortable pace; the north shore has a wooden pier and pedalo rental, and the lakeside hotels do excellent tea and lokanta lunches. October is equally special — the beech forest turns brilliant orange and gold.

There is no practical public route to Abant; it is a drive, about 270 km and 2.5–3 hours each way. With a private transfer the driver waits at the lake while you walk the loop, and the mountain descent through the Abant valley is part of the show.

Ağva

Black Sea · 102 km northeast · 75–125 min

2 riversmeet the sea here

Watch & read

Ağva is a fishing village where two rivers meet the Black Sea — wooden boats on the water, a river estuary calm enough to swim and kayak in summer, and seafood lunches with a quiet, local feel. The cliff path out to Kilimli Bay is the walk to save energy for.

102 km northeast with no rail link, and no realistic way back without your own wheels — which is exactly why it stays quiet. A private transfer makes it an easy day: about 75 minutes out on a clear morning.

Day-trip tips

Six things worth knowing before you go

  1. 01

Go on a weekday — Belgrade Forest and Polonezköy fill up with Istanbul families at spring and summer weekends.

  2. 02

Pack a layer for Abant: at 1,328 metres it runs 10–15°C cooler than the city, even in June.

  3. 03

Sapanca and Abant share the same motorway east — leave by 7am and you can do both in one long day.

  4. 04

April and May are the sweet spot: wildflowers, peak-green forest and minimal crowds.

  5. 05

Every place in this guide is free to enter — the only real cost of the day is getting there.

  6. 06

October is Abant's second season: the beech forest turns brilliant orange and gold.

Frequently asked questions

  • The best nature day trips from Istanbul are: (1) Belgrade Forest (Belgrat Ormanı) — 24 km north by road, Istanbul's urban forest with Ottoman reservoirs, walking trails and picnic areas; (2) Polonezköy Natural Park — 28 km northeast on the Asian side, a quiet Polish-heritage village in the middle of a forest; (3) Sapanca Lake — 133 km east, gentle and lakeside, great for Sunday outings; (4) Abant Lake — about 270 km east near Bolu, a stunning mountain lake; (5) Ağva — 102 km northeast, a fishing village at the confluence of two rivers on the Black Sea. All are within 40 minutes to 3 hours by private transfer.

  • Yes — Belgrade Forest is a public forest and free to enter. It covers 5,500 hectares just north of Istanbul and contains 9 Ottoman-era reservoirs and dams built in the 16th–19th centuries (still supplying some of Istanbul's water). Walking trails vary from easy 2km loops to 10km+ routes. The forest is extremely popular on spring and summer weekends with Istanbulites who bring picnic gear — go on a weekday for peace and quiet.

  • Abant Lake is about 270 km east of Istanbul by road, near Bolu province in northwestern Anatolia. By private transfer it's approximately 2.5–3 hours each way. The lake sits at 1,328 metres altitude, surrounded by beech and pine forests — significantly cooler than Istanbul in summer (10–15°C cooler). It's a National Park with a 6 km circular walking trail around the lake. Entry is free. The area is famous for its autumn foliage (September–October) but beautiful in spring (May–June) when wildflowers bloom.

  • Polonezköy (Adampol) is a small village 28 km northeast of Istanbul, within the Asian-side forest belt. It was founded in 1842 by Polish exiles, and to this day maintains its Central European character — wooden houses, orchid gardens, a Catholic church, and more horses than cars. The entire village sits within a Natural Park. It's perfect for a half-day trip: a stroll through the village, lunch at one of the charming 'çiftlik' (farmhouse) restaurants, and a forest walk. Very popular in spring with Istanbul families.

  • Yes — Sapanca Lake (133 km) and Abant Lake (about 270 km) can be combined into one longer day trip as they share a similar direction (E80 highway east). Leave by 7am, stop at Sapanca for 1.5h (waterfront cafés, pedalo boats), continue to Abant for the circular forest walk (2h), then return. Total drive time: approximately 5–6 hours including stops. Comfortable with a private transfer — driver handles all routing.

  • One-way from central Istanbul: Belgrade Forest is €42 in a Standard VIP van; Polonezköy €70; Sapanca €99; Abant €219; Ağva €98. For a day trip, book a return — the driver waits or comes back at the hour you set, at a fixed price both ways.

  • Spring (April–May) is the absolute best: wildflowers in the forests, moderate temperatures, fresh green leaves and minimal crowds. Early summer (June) is also excellent before the July heat sets in. Autumn (October) is superb for foliage colour especially at Abant Lake. Summer weekends at Belgrade Forest get extremely crowded — go weekdays in July/August.

After something saltier? The beaches guide covers the coast the same way, and the reservation page will price any of these escapes against your own hotel address.
