Galataport puts you ashore in Karaköy, which is the good news: the Galata Tower is a ten-minute walk uphill and Sultanahmet is a ten-minute drive across the Golden Horn, so a ship day does not begin with an hour on a coach. Your guide meets you at the terminal exit and the day is planned around one number — the all-aboard time on your ticket. We build in ninety minutes of margin and stop adding sights when that margin is gone. A standard call gives eight hours ashore, which covers Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, Topkapı and the Grand Bazaar with lunch in between; a short call of four or five hours takes the old city alone. If your ship calls at Kuşadası instead, ask for that quote: Ephesus is twenty-five minutes from the pier and the day looks completely different.
After the ship clears, your guide meets you at the terminal exit — a few minutes from the gangway.
Ten to fifteen minutes by car from Karaköy to Sultanahmet.
Both on the same square, with the Hippodrome between them.
The courtyards, the treasury and the terrace over the Bosphorus.
A table in the old city or on the Golden Horn — your guide books it before you land.
Two covered markets, ten minutes apart on foot.
The tower and the streets below it, a short walk from the ship.
At least 90 minutes before all-aboard, earlier if the port is busy.
The honest answer is that a ship waits for its own excursions, not for an independent one. That is why the day is built with a 90-minute buffer, why the driver's mobile number is on your voucher, and why we drop the last stop rather than the margin if traffic turns. In the rare case a delay is ours, getting you to the next port is ours to solve too.
Eight hours is the standard call and covers the old city properly. Four to five hours still works for Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque and one bazaar. Under four, a guided walk around Karaköy and Galata from the pier is the better use of the time.
Then the day is Ephesus, twenty-five minutes from the pier, with the Terrace Houses and the Basilica of St John if the call is long. Ask for the Kuşadası quote — it is a different price level from Istanbul.
Yes. Embarkation and disembarkation days are the quietest time to see the city, and airport transfers, luggage and a hotel night can go in the same quote.
No, and that is unusual for a cruise port. Karaköy is at the mouth of the Golden Horn: the Galata Tower is a walk, Sultanahmet is a short drive, and the ship stays in sight for most of the morning.
Cards work almost everywhere, including the bazaars. Small notes are useful for a tea, a taxi or a tip; there is an exchange office inside the terminal.
