Bosphorus Swim 2026 — Key Facts

Race Day
August 23, 2026. Early-morning start. The Bosphorus is closed to shipping for the race.
Route
~6.5 km. Kanlıca (Asia) → Kuruçeşme (Europe). Current-assisted, point-to-point.
Organiser
Olympic Committee. Turkish National Olympic Committee. Limited places, national + international quotas.

* Date and registration window subject to organiser confirmation — verify on the official Turkish National Olympic Committee site.

It's the only race on earth where you start in one continent and finish in another. Each August thousands ride the current ~6.5 km from Kanlıca in Asia to Kuruçeşme in Europe while the world's busiest strait closes to ships. See the water below, then read registration, the route and the race-morning logistics.

The water you'll cross

Bosphorus · turquoise on a still morning

Watch & read

Before the logistics, the reassurance: the strait you're swimming is cleaner than most first-timers expect, and its resident dolphins are proof the water is alive. On a still August morning it turns the turquoise you see here — the same water the ~6.5 km course runs through.

You are not the only swimmer out there

Dolphins work the Bosphorus year-round, and on a still morning the strait turns the same turquoise the race swims through. The water you cross is cleaner than almost every first-time visitor expects.

Watch & read

Six and a half kilometres down the strait, the bridges overhead, the city watching from both banks — current-assisted, point-to-point, Asia to Europe. This is what people fly across the world to swim, and the reason the road-closure planning below is worth getting right.

Six and a half kilometres of strait, the bridges overhead, the city watching from both banks. This is the course — and the reason people fly across the world to swim something they could swim in a pool at home.

How the Race Works

Register early
Places open months ahead via the Turkish National Olympic Committee and sell out — separate national and international quotas. Secure your spot before booking flights.
Boat to the start
On race morning swimmers are ferried by boat to the Kanlıca start on the Asian side.
Swim Asia → Europe
~6.5 km down the strait with the current, between scenic shores, the bridges overhead and the city watching.
Finish at Kuruçeşme
Exit on the European side at Kuruçeşme. Medals, the famous continent-to-continent bragging rights, and a great post-race brunch.

Race-Morning Logistics & Road Closures

The start (Kanlıca, Asia) and finish (Kuruçeşme, Europe) are on opposite continents, so you can't simply park at one and walk to the other. On race morning, roads along the Bosphorus — around Kanlıca, Çengelköy, Bebek and Kuruçeşme — see closures and heavy congestion, with spectators packing the bridges and waterfront.

This is exactly where a pre-booked transfer earns its keep: a driver who plans around the closures gets you to the assembly point before the early start, and meets you near the finish afterwards so you're not chasing a surging taxi in a swim cap. Self-driving near the route on race day is best avoided entirely.

Supporters can watch from the bridges or book a Bosphorus cruise for a waterside view of the swim.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • The Samsung Bosphorus Cross-Continental Swim is expected to take place on August 23, 2026. Organised by the Turkish National Olympic Committee, it is the only race in the world where you swim from one continent (Asia) to another (Europe). The route runs roughly 6.5 km down the Bosphorus, from Kanlıca on the Asian side to Kuruçeşme on the European side, with the strait closed to maritime traffic during the event. Confirm the exact date and registration window on the official Olympic Committee site.

  • Registration opens months in advance through the Turkish National Olympic Committee and typically fills fast, with thousands of swimmers from dozens of countries. There are separate national and international quotas. Because places are limited and sell out, international swimmers should register as early as the window opens and book flights and accommodation immediately after securing a spot.

  • On race morning, swimmers are transported by boat to the Kanlıca start on the Asian side, then swim across to the Kuruçeşme finish on the European side. The early start, road closures along the Bosphorus, and the split between start and finish points make morning logistics tricky — a pre-booked transfer that knows the closure map gets you to the assembly point on time and collects you near the finish afterwards. City rides start from €30.

  • Yes. The Bosphorus is closed to shipping during the race, and roads along both shores (especially around Kanlıca, Çengelköy, Bebek and Kuruçeşme) see closures and heavy congestion on the morning of the event. Spectators line the bridges and waterfront. Allow extra time and avoid self-driving near the route — a private transfer with a driver who plans around the closures is the reliable option.

  • Yes. We offer fixed-price airport transfers from IST and SAW from €39.99, plus early-morning race-day rides to the assembly/start area and pickups near the Kuruçeşme finish. We can also handle group transfers for swim clubs and supporters. No event surcharge — your fixed price is confirmed at booking.
