Neighbourhoods, transport, money and the small things nobody tells you before the first morning

9 marzo 2026·14 min di lettura·ShuttleVIP Travel Experts

Istanbul is one of the world's greatest cities — a metropolis straddling two continents, 15 million people, 3,000 years of history, and a cuisine that makes visitors plan return trips before they've even left. But arriving in Istanbul for the first time can feel overwhelming. This guide gives you the practical, honest knowledge you need to have a smooth, safe, and unforgettable visit — and if you're still settling on dates, our guide to the best time to visit Istanbul breaks the seasons down.

Istanbul skyline - first-time visitor travel tips guide

Istanbul — where Europe meets Asia, ancient history meets modern life

Arriving in Istanbul: Airports & First Steps

Istanbul Airport (IST) — Main International Hub

Located on the European side, 40–50 km from the city center. This is Asia's largest airport and handles most long-haul international flights. Immigration and customs can take 30–60 minutes — have your visa/e-Visa ready.

VIP Transfer
Best option for first arrivals. Professional, door-to-door.
Metro (M11)
~90 min to Taksim with transfer. Cheap but complex with luggage.
Havaist Bus
Multiple routes. 60–90 min depending on traffic.

Sabiha Gökcen Airport (SAW) — Budget & European Airlines

Located on the Asian side, 50–60 km from the European city center. Served by Pegasus, Wizz Air, Ryanair, and low-cost carriers. Note: it's further from most tourist hotels and crossing the Bosphorus adds time.

Tip: A VIP transfer from SAW to Sultanahmet or Taksim takes 60–90 minutes. Far easier than navigating public buses across the Bosphorus with luggage.

Best Neighborhoods to Stay In

Sultanahmet (Old City)
Walking distance to Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque, Topkapı Palace, Grand Bazaar. Very touristy.. More expensive, aggressive sales, limited nightlife.
Taksim / Beyoğlu
Central, great nightlife, restaurants, cafes on İstiklal Avenue. More modern feel.. Noisy, further from historical sites (but reachable by tram).
Beşiktaş / Ortaköy
Hip, local vibe, excellent restaurants, Bosphorus views, trendy cafes.. Further from Old City sights, pricier accommodation.
Kadıköy (Asian Side)
Authentic local experience, amazing food scene, far fewer tourists, affordable.. Ferry required to reach European sights (~15 min).

Getting Around Istanbul

Metro & Tram
The T1 tram line connects Sultanahmet, Kapalıçarşı (Grand Bazaar), and Kabataş. Get an Istanbulkart (transport card) for easy, contactless travel across metro, tram, and bus.
Ferry (Vapur)
Ferries cross between European and Asian sides from Eminönü, Karaköy, Kabataş, and Beşiktaş. Scenic, affordable, and a joy to ride. Use Istanbulkart.
Taxi
Hailed on the street or via BiTaksi app. Always insist the meter is running. Beware of 'scenic routes' — use Google Maps to monitor.
Uber/InDrive
Available and reliable in Istanbul. Prices are fixed before the ride — no meter disputes. Works well across the city.
Private Transfer
Best for airport arrivals/departures, day trips, late-night travel, or groups. Fixed prices, no surprises, door-to-door.

Money, Currency & Payments

  • Currency: Turkish Lira (?/TRY). Exchange at PTT post offices or city center exchange offices — avoid airport exchange kiosks (bad rates).
  • Cards: Visa and Mastercard widely accepted. Contactless payments work in most restaurants, shops, and hotels.
  • ATMs: Available everywhere. Use ATMs attached to banks to avoid skimming. Withdraw larger amounts to minimize fees.
  • Euro/USD: Many tourist services (including ShuttleVIP) price in EUR. Accepted at most tourist-facing businesses and hotels.
  • Tipping: 10–15% at restaurants is appreciated. Round up taxi fares. Not mandatory but always welcome.

Must-Try Istanbul Food & Drink

Simit
Sesame-coated bread ring, the Istanbul breakfast staple
Balık Ekmek
Fresh grilled fish sandwich from boats at Eminönü
Kebab (Döner/Adana)
Turkey's iconic grilled meat — find it everywhere
Meze Platters
Small dishes of dips, salads, and appetizers
Baklava
Honey-soaked pistachio pastry — get it from Hafız Mustafa
Turkish Tea (Çay)
Served in tulip-shaped glasses, ubiquitous across the city
Turkish Coffee
Strong, unfiltered, with grounds at the bottom — don't stir!
Künefe
Hot cheese dessert with syrup and pistachios
Ayran
Salted yogurt drink — the perfect companion to kebab

Safety & Common Tourist Mistakes

  • Istanbul is generally safe for tourists. Stick to well-lit, populated areas at night — especially in Taksim and Sultanahmet.
  • Beware of the "shoe shine" and "friendly stranger" scams in tourist areas. Politely decline unknown men who strike up conversation near Sultanahmet.
  • Never agree to a price without asking first — especially restaurant prices in tourist areas (look for menus with prices displayed).
  • The Turkish emergency number is 112. Police: 155. Tourist police office in Sultanahmet is very helpful for visitor issues.
  • Book airport transfers in advance. Unlicensed taxis at arrivals halls can charge 3–5x official rates from unsuspecting tourists.
  • Dress modestly when visiting mosques (Blue Mosque, Süleymaniye). Women should cover heads and shoulders; everyone removes shoes.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Five essentials: (1) Istanbul straddles Europe and Asia — your hotel side matters for daily commute; (2) the historic core (Sultanahmet) is walkable but transport elsewhere takes time; (3) carry small TRY for street vendors and tipping, card works almost everywhere else; (4) skip-the-line tickets at Hagia Sophia and Topkapi save hours; (5) the call to prayer is normal and beautiful — five times a day, including at dawn.

  • For first-time tourists, Sultanahmet (next to Hagia Sophia) is the best base for sightseeing. For nightlife and Bosphorus views, Beyoğlu and Karaköy. For modern shopping and rooftop dinners, Beşiktaş and Şişli. The Asian side (Kadıköy, Moda) is great for repeat visitors who want a local non-touristy feel.

  • Istanbul is generally safe for tourists — violent crime against visitors is rare. The main risks are pickpocketing in crowded markets (Grand Bazaar, Eminönü), inflated taxi fares, and occasional fake-friendliness scams in Sultanahmet ("come to my brother's carpet shop"). Stay aware in crowds, use card not cash, and book transport through reputable services.

  • Card works at almost all hotels, restaurants, shops, museums and supermarkets. Carry small TRY (50–200 lira in cash) for street food, taxis if you take them, tips, mosque entry donations, and tipping the hotel porter. ATMs are everywhere — use bank-branded ATMs (Garanti BBVA, IşBank, Akbank) and decline the "currency conversion" prompt to get the better rate.

  • Tipping is appreciated but not mandatory. Restaurants: 10% is standard if no service charge is on the bill (check "servis dahil"). Taxis: round up to the nearest 10 TRY. Hotel porters: 20–50 TRY per bag. Tour guides: €10–€20 per person for a full-day private tour. Cash tips are preferred for service staff.

  • Buy an Istanbulkart at any kiosk (~70 TRY plus credit) — it works on metro, tram, ferry and bus. Tram T1 covers Sultanahmet ↔ Kabataş. Metro M2 covers Taksim ↔ Şişli ↔ Maslak. For airport runs use a pre-booked private transfer (fixed price, flight tracking). Walking is the best way to explore Sultanahmet, Karaköy and Cihangir.

Start Your Istanbul Trip Right. Your first impression of Istanbul starts the moment you land. ShuttleVIP provides professional, fixed-price airport transfers — no meter, no surprises, a professional English-speaking driver waiting for you at arrivals.
