Best Beaches Near Istanbul 2026

Kilyos · Şile · Büyükada · Florya · Ağva · Çilingöz — where to swim, when to go, and how to actually get there

6 beaches · 6 clips
The distances are real — Ağva and Çilingöz sit at opposite ends of the province.

Most visitors never find out that Istanbul has beaches at all. Within 40–90 minutes of the centre you can be in the open Black Sea or on a car-free island in the Marmara — here are the best beaches near Istanbul, what each one is actually like, and how to get there.

Kilyos

Black Sea · 32 km north · 30–55 min

18–26°Csea, Jul–Aug

Regarder & lire

Kilyos (Sarıyer) is the closest proper sandy beach to central Istanbul. A 32 km drive north along the European shore brings you to open Black Sea coast where the water is cleaner and the waves stronger than the Marmara. In July and August it turns into Istanbul's Ibiza — beach clubs pump music, sunbed rows fill by 10am at weekends, and the road back becomes a car park by 6pm.

The beach clubs — Arena Beach, Escape Beach Club, Aqua Club — charge €15–25 including a sunbed. The free public beaches (Kilyos Sahili) are perfectly fine if you bring your own gear. On safety: currents can be strong near the northern headland, so always swim within the flagged green zones.

Without a car it's the M2 to Hacıosman and then a dolmuş: 90–110 minutes, and packed by mid-morning in summer. A private transfer is 30–55 minutes from Taksim, and your driver comes back at the hour you name — which is the part that matters on a beach road at sunset.

Kilyos, from the sand

Open Black Sea, real waves, and the sandbar that makes this the closest thing Istanbul has to a proper beach. Worth thirty seconds before you commit a whole day to it.

Şile

Black Sea · 78 km northeast · 50–85 min

18–24°Csea, Jul–Aug

Regarder & lire

Şile sits 78 km northeast on the Asian side Black Sea coast. It takes 50–85 minutes by car depending on traffic but rewards you with sandier shores, fewer daytrippers, and a charming old town with a 14th-century Genoese castle and lighthouse. The sea is calmer here than at Kilyos.

It suits families, couples, and anyone who wants a genuinely relaxed day rather than a party scene. Several beach hotels sell day access to their facilities. The town's fish restaurants are excellent — lunch with fresh catch over the Black Sea after a morning swim is a quintessential Istanbul summer.

Şile is the one on this list with no way back. There is no direct metro, and taxis at the beach rarely agree to the return leg — which is how people end up stranded at 7pm with wet towels and no plan.

Uzunkum: Istanbul's only Blue Flag beach

Şile's Uzunkum holds the only Blue Flag in the province — an actual water-quality certification rather than a tourism board's adjective. This is the walk-through, including the camping ground behind the sand.

Büyükada

Marmara Sea · 55 min by fast ferry

21–26°Csea, Jul–Aug

Regarder & lire

The Princes Islands (Adalar) are nine small islands in the Marmara, visible from Istanbul's Asian shore. The largest, Büyükada, is the most visited and has the best swimming. There are no cars — you move by bicycle, horse carriage, or on foot. Victorian wooden mansions line the hillsides and the air smells of pine and sea.

Swimming spots include Ada Beach Club (paid, sunbeds, café), the rocky coves along the northwestern shore (free), and the artificial beach near the ferry dock. Summer sea runs 21–26°C — warmer and calmer than the Black Sea. Go on a weekday: summer weekend ferries sell out and the island gets very crowded.

Ferries from Istanbul

  • İDO fast catamaran from Kabataş — about 55 min, roughly 150–200 TRY each way. The one to take.
  • Şehir Hatları city ferry from Kabataş — about 1h 45min, roughly 80–100 TRY with an Istanbulkart.
  • Şehir Hatları from Bostancı — about 1 hour, and the better start if you're staying near Kadıköy.

Florya

Marmara Sea · 24 km west · 20–40 min

20–25°Csea, Jul–Aug

Regarder & lire

Twenty-four km west on the Marmara shore, and the only water on this list you can reach, swim, and get back from between lunch and dinner. It is more city than escape, and nobody would fly in for it — but if your trip has one loose afternoon, this is the honest answer.

Ağva

Black Sea · 110 km northeast · 80–140 min

18–24°Csea, Jul–Aug

Regarder & lire

Thirty km past Şile, still officially Istanbul, is where two rivers meet the Black Sea. This is the quietest water in the guide: river boats and camping rather than beach clubs, and coves you have to be told about. Only worth it if you have the whole day — 80 to 140 minutes each way, and no realistic way back without your own car.

The hidden beach at Ağva

The kind of cove that never appears on a day-trip itinerary, filmed by someone who drove out to find it. This is the argument for the two-hour drive.

Çilingöz

Black Sea · 115 km west · Çatalca

18–24°Csea, Jul–Aug

Regarder & lire

Pine forest running straight down to Black Sea sand — and still, officially, Istanbul. Çilingöz Tabiat Parkı sits in Çatalca, 115 km west of the city, which is why almost no visitor finds it. There is no metro and no dolmuş out here; it is a drive, and that is the whole reason it stays empty.

Beach day tips

Six things worth knowing before you go

  1. 01

Leave before 9am on weekdays and before 8am at weekends to beat the traffic out to Kilyos and Şile.

  2. 02

Pack SPF 50+. The summer sun is intense here and reflection off the sea amplifies the burn.

  3. 03

Bring your own water — beach club drink prices in July and August are punishing.

  4. 04

Black Sea currents are stronger than the Marmara's. Swim inside the flagged zones, especially at Kilyos.

  5. 05

Coming back from Kilyos on a summer Sunday between 6pm and 9pm can take two hours. Plan around it.

  6. 06

Book beach clubs ahead for weekends — the Kilyos clubs sell out by noon in peak season.

Frequently asked questions

  • The top beaches near Istanbul are: (1) Kilyos (Black Sea) — wide sandy beach in Sarıyer, 32 km north of the city, 30–55 min by car depending on traffic, best on weekdays; (2) Şile (Black Sea) — 78 km northeast, sandier, calmer, with a lovely old lighthouse; (3) Büyükada / Princes Islands (Marmara Sea) — reached by ferry (55 min on the fast catamaran), car-free, charming, more social swimming spots; (4) Florya / Bakırköy (Marmara coast) — closest to the city but more industrial; (5) Ağva (Black Sea) — 110 km northeast, river estuary and camping; (6) Çilingöz (Black Sea) — a forest-backed nature-park beach in Çatalca, 115 km west, the quietest of the six.

  • By private transfer: 30–55 minutes from Taksim or Sultanahmet depending on traffic, €69 one-way in a Standard VIP van. By public transport: Metro to Hacıosman (M2) + minibus (dolmuş) to Kilyos — total 90–120 min, cheap but crowded in summer. Uber/Bolt: available but surge pricing on summer weekends can be very high. A ShuttleVIP return transfer is €138 in the VIP van — a fixed price both ways, so the 6pm Sunday traffic back into the city is our problem, not yours.

  • Yes, but watch the Black Sea currents — they're stronger than Mediterranean and Marmara beaches. Swim within flagged zones. Kilyos beaches are supervised by lifeguards in summer. The sea temperature in June is around 18–20°C, July–August reaches 23–26°C. Don't swim near the river mouth areas. Children should stay in shallow marked zones.

  • Yes — Büyükada is the most popular. Take the İDO fast catamaran from Kabataş (~55 min) or the Şehir Hatları city ferry (~1h 45min from Kabataş, ~1h from Bostancı on the Asian side). You pay in lira with an Istanbulkart: city lines run roughly 80–100 TRY each way, the fast catamaran roughly 150–200 TRY. The island has small coves with ladders into the Marmara Sea plus Ada Beach Club. No cars on the island — you explore by bicycle or horse carriage. Go early on summer weekends as ferries get very crowded.

  • July and August are peak beach season: sea temperatures 23–27°C, hot sunny days (30–35°C air). Late June is almost as good with fewer crowds. September is excellent — warm sea, fewer tourists, cheaper accommodation. May (sea only 17°C) is too cold for most swimmers but perfect for Princes Islands cycling. Avoid weekends in July/August at Kilyos — extremely crowded.

  • Yes. ShuttleVIP offers private beach transfers to Kilyos and Şile — your driver picks you up from your hotel, takes you to the beach, and returns at the time you set. Perfect for families or groups who don't want to fight summer traffic or find a taxi back at 7pm. From central Istanbul, Kilyos is €69 one way in a Standard VIP van (€138 return); Şile is €98. Book at least 24 hours in advance via our reservation page.

Planning the rest of the trip? Our Istanbul tours cover the city itself, and the reservation page will price any of these beaches against your own hotel address.
