Ephesus is one of the most spectacular ancient sites in the world — a vast Roman city frozen in marble, where you can walk down the same streets that once carried 200,000 residents in the 1st century AD. The Library of Celsus, the Great Theatre, the Temple of Artemis (one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World) — it's all here.
The good news: from Istanbul, Ephesus is very doable as a day trip. A short flight to Izmir gets you there in time to spend a full afternoon among the ruins. Here's everything you need to plan it perfectly.

How to Get from Istanbul to Ephesus
Option 1: Fly to Izmir (Best for Day Trips)
Turkish Airlines, Pegasus, and SunExpress fly from Istanbul (IST or SAW) to Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport (ADB) several times daily. The flight takes about 1 hour 10 minutes. Catch an early morning flight (6–7 AM) to maximize your time in Ephesus.
From Izmir Airport to Ephesus (Selçuk): ~1 hour by private transfer, or Izban commuter train (70 min) to Selçuk station.
Option 2: Overnight Bus (Budget)
Night buses depart Istanbul's Esenler Otogar (bus terminal) to Selçuk or Izmir. Duration: 8–9 hours. Not ideal for a single day trip, but cost-effective if you plan to spend 2+ nights in the region. Tickets from FlixBus or Pamukkale Turizm.
Option 3: Train from Istanbul to Izmir
There is no direct high-speed line between Istanbul and Izmir. The rail route combines a ferry across the Marmara to Bandırma with the Bandırma–Izmir train, around 9–10 hours in total. Comfortable and scenic, but far too slow for a day trip — keep it for a longer west-coast circuit.
Top Sights at Ephesus
- Library of Celsus
- Built 117 AD. The iconic two-storey Roman library facade — one of the most photographed ancient structures in Turkey.
- Great Theatre
- 3rd century BC. Enormous amphitheatre that seated 25,000 people. Still used for concerts today. Climb to the top for epic views.
- Temple of Artemis

- Terrace Houses
- +1 hour. Extra ticket required but worth it — preserved Roman villa interiors with original mosaics and frescoes still intact.
- House of the Virgin Mary
- 30 min drive. A pilgrimage site 7 km from Ephesus — where Mary is believed to have spent her last years. Visited by popes.
- Ephesus Museum (Selçuk)

Private Guided Tour

- Costs more than going on your own

Combine Ephesus with Pamukkale or Kusadasi
Kusadasi — Turkish Aegean Beach Town
Just 18 km from Ephesus, Kusadasi is a lively coastal resort with a pretty harbour, beaches, and seafood restaurants. If you're visiting in summer, it's perfect to combine for a half-day afternoon after Ephesus. It's also a major cruise ship port.
Pamukkale — Cotton Castle Terraces
Pamukkale's surreal white calcium terraces and warm thermal pools are 2.5 hours from Ephesus by car. It's feasible to visit both on a 2-day trip from Istanbul: Ephesus on Day 1, Pamukkale on Day 2, fly back from Denizli airport. A Turkish highlight not to miss.

Essential Tips for Your Ephesus Visit
- ›Wear comfortable walking shoes — the site is over 2 km of uneven marble and cobblestones.
- ›Bring a hat and sunscreen — there's almost no shade inside the ruins, especially deadly in summer.
- ›Enter from the Upper (North) Entrance — you walk downhill toward the Lower Gate, ending near the port road. Never walk back uphill in heat.
- ›Buy the Terrace Houses ticket — it costs extra on top of the Ephesus entry, but the preserved Roman villas with their mosaics are extraordinary.
- ›Visit on a weekday if possible — weekend crowds are intense, especially at the Library of Celsus.
- ›Download an offline Ephesus audio guide app before you go — much better than the official panels.
- ›Carry Turkish Lira for small purchases in Selçuk village — most vendors don't take cards.
