The Çanakkale region — home to Ancient Troy, the Gallipoli battlefields, and the world-record 1915 Çanakkale Bridge — is one of the most historically rich day-trip destinations from Istanbul. Since the bridge opened in 2022, the drive time dropped from 5–6 hours (with ferry) to just 3.5–4 hours, making this extraordinary region genuinely accessible from the city in a single day.

Ancient Greek and Roman ruins — columns and marble streets like those at Troy

Ancient ruins of western Turkey — Troy and Gallipoli are just 3.5 hours from Istanbul

Ancient Troy — UNESCO World Heritage Site

Troy (Troia/Truva) is one of the most famous names in all of history — the city of the Trojan War, immortalised in Homer's Iliad. The archaeological site near the village of Tevfikiye, 30 km south of Çanakkale, has been continuously excavated since Heinrich Schliemann first dug here in 1871. UNESCO listed it as a World Heritage Site in 1998.

What makes Troy extraordinary is that archaeologists have discovered 9 distinct cities built on top of each other, spanning 4,000 years of continuous human occupation (3000 BC to 500 AD). Troy VI/VII (1700–1200 BC) corresponds to the legendary Trojan War period. The walls, ramp, and towers are remarkably intact.

Gallipoli — The Anzac Battlefields

The Gallipoli (Gelibolu) peninsula is the site of one of WWI's most significant and tragic campaigns. In 1915, Allied forces (including Australian and New Zealand troops — the ANZACs) attempted to seize the Dardanelles strait and open a supply route to Russia. The campaign failed after 9 months, with 130,000 deaths on all sides.

Today the peninsula is a national park and deeply moving place to visit. Key sites include Anzac Cove, Lone Pine Cemetery, Chunuk Bair (the highest point seized by Anzacs), and the majestic Çanakkale Martyrs' Memorial. Turkish commander Mustafa Kemal (later Atatürk) famously wrote: "Those heroes that shed their blood and lost their lives... you are now lying in the soil of a friendly country. Therefore rest in peace." The quote is inscribed at the memorial.

ANZAC Day — April 25

The annual ANZAC day dawn service at Anzac Cove draws 10,000–20,000 visitors from Australia, New Zealand, and beyond. If visiting on April 25, book accommodation and transport many months in advance. The atmosphere is deeply solemn and extraordinarily moving.

The 1915 Çanakkale Bridge — World's Longest

Opened on March 18, 2022 — the 107th anniversary of the Çanakkale naval victory — the 1915 Çanakkale Bridge spans the Dardanelles with a record-breaking main span of 2,023 metres (the year 2023 being the 100th anniversary of the Turkish Republic, encoded in the length). The two towers are 318 metres high, matching the date of the March 18 victory. Crossing it by car is genuinely spectacular — the pylons dwarf everything around them and on a clear day you can see the Aegean opening to the south. Toll each way: approximately €5–8.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Yes, but it's a long day — 330 km each direction. By private transfer, Çanakkale is about 3.5–4 hours from Istanbul (via the 1915 Çanakkale Bridge). You'd typically visit Troy (about 30 km south of Çanakkale) and the Çanakkale city centre or Gallipoli peninsula in one full day. Flying (Istanbul to Çanakkale Airport, 1h) makes more sense if time is tight. Most visitors do it as a 2-day overnight to see both Troy and Gallipoli properly.

  • Troy (Troia/Truva archaeological site) is 330 km from Istanbul — approximately 3.5–4 hours by private transfer via the Osmangazi Bridge or 1915 Çanakkale Bridge. The site is located near the village of Tevfikiye, about 30 km south of Çanakkale city centre. Tickets for the site and the Troy Museum next door are set by the Ministry of Culture and change each season, so check the current price before you go.

  • The 1915 Çanakkale Bridge (Çanakkale 1915 Köprüsü), opened in 2022, is now the world's longest suspension bridge with a main span of 2,023 metres. It crosses the Dardanelles strait connecting Europe and Asia. Crossing it by car is a spectacular experience — the bridge is illuminated at night. It has cut the Istanbul–Çanakkale drive by 2+ hours compared to the ferry crossing.

  • The Gallipoli peninsula is a major WWI battlefield site with profound historical significance (1915 Allied campaign). Key sites: Anzac Cove, Chunuk Bair, ÇANAKKALE Martyrs' Memorial, Lone Pine Cemetery, and The Nek. The Gallipoli National Park is free to enter. It's particularly moving for Australian, New Zealand, British, French and Turkish visitors. April 25 (ANZAC Day) sees large dawn memorial services — plan well ahead if visiting then.

  • Options: (1) Private transfer (~3.5–4h, most convenient, door-to-door, from €239 one-way); (2) Flight from Istanbul Airport (IST) to Çanakkale Airport (CKZ) — 1 hour, but requires airport time + transfer at both ends; (3) Coach from Istanbul Esenler otogar — ~4.5–5h, cheap (~€15), frequent. Renting a car is good for independent travellers. There is no direct train to Çanakkale.

  • Not strictly necessary — the Troy Museum next to the site has excellent explanations and the site has good English signage. However, a local guide brings the layers of Troy (there are 9 distinct cities built on top of each other) to life. The famous Trojan Horse replica is great for photos. Guided tours from Istanbul typically include transport, guide and entry — request a quote for your date and group size.
