On October 29, 1923, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk proclaimed the Turkish Republic to the Grand National Assembly. Every year on this date, Turkey's most patriotic day fills Istanbul with flags, parades, and genuine national pride. For foreign visitors, it offers a rare window into Turkish identity and culture — and autumn Istanbul at 20°C with far fewer tourists is a beautiful backdrop.

Parade & Viewing Guide

Vatan Caddesi, Fatih (official parade)
The official ceremony and military parade take place on Vatan Caddesi (Adnan Menderes Bulvarı), usually from around 10:30. The avenue closes to traffic from dawn — take the M1A metro to Emniyet–Fatih and arrive early.
Taksim Square & İstiklal Avenue
The Republic Monument is the holiday's symbolic heart: the wreath ceremony is held here at 13:00 on October 28, and İstiklal is hung with giant flags. Crowded but festive all day. Metro: Taksim station.
Bosphorus Bridges (evening)
After dark the 15 Temmuz Şehitler and Fatih Sultan Mehmet bridges are lit in red and white. Best seen from Ortaköy, Çırağan and Rumelihisarı, or from a ferry.
Ortaköy Mosque and the 15 Temmuz Şehitler Bridge lit up at night on the Bosphorus
Ortaköy after dark — the classic waterfront spot for watching the bridges

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Republic Day (Cumhuriyet Bayramı) on October 29 is Turkey's most important national holiday, celebrating the proclamation of the Turkish Republic by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk on October 29, 1923. In 2026, it marks the Republic's 103rd anniversary. It is a full public holiday — government offices, banks, and many businesses close. The day is marked by parades, flag ceremonies, concerts, and fireworks across Turkey.

  • Key Republic Day events in Istanbul: (1) the official ceremony and military parade on Vatan Caddesi in Fatih, usually from around 10:30 on October 29; (2) the wreath ceremony at the Republic Monument in Taksim Square, held at 13:00 on October 28 as the holiday begins; (3) flags on façades, ferries and bridges across the city; (4) the Bosphorus bridges lit in red and white after dark; (5) concerts and evening events announced by the municipalities each year. Exact 2026 times are confirmed by the Istanbul Governorship a few days before.

  • Yes — October 29 is a full public holiday in Turkey; in 2026 it falls on a Thursday, and the holiday officially begins at 13:00 on Wednesday, October 28. Banks, government offices, post offices, and many Turkish businesses are closed. Tourist attractions (Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace, museums) generally remain open or have special holiday hours. Public transport (metro, ferries, trams) operates on holiday schedules — and on October 28–29 İBB-run lines (metro, tram, İETT buses and Şehir Hatları ferries) are free in 2026: just tap your Istanbulkart as usual. Istanbul becomes festively decorated with Turkish flags from late October.

  • October 29 brings road closures around the official ceremony: Vatan Caddesi (Adnan Menderes Bulvarı) in Fatih and the roads feeding into it close from early morning until the parade ends, usually early afternoon. Taksim Square and the waterfront between Beşiktaş and Ortaköy get crowded in the evening, when people come out to see the illuminated bridges. Pre-booking your airport transfer ensures your driver knows alternative routes. Avoid taxis on holiday mornings — drivers unfamiliar with road closures can strand you in traffic.

  • Best viewing for Republic Day 2026: (1) Vatan Caddesi in Fatih — the official parade route; the road closes from dawn, so come by metro (M1A, Emniyet–Fatih) and arrive early; (2) Taksim Square and İstiklal Avenue — the Republic Monument and giant flags make it the busiest photo spot all holiday; (3) Ortaköy, Çırağan and Rumelihisarı waterfronts — the best views of the bridges lit in red and white after dark; (4) a Bosphorus ferry at dusk — the cheapest way to see both shores dressed in flags.

  • October is one of the best months to visit Istanbul. Temperatures are ideal (16–22°C), summer crowds have dropped significantly, the Bosphorus still has warm tones from summer sun, and October 29 Republic Day adds a unique cultural event to your trip. Autumn colors begin in late October, particularly beautiful in Belgrad Forest and along the Bosphorus. Hotel rates return to off-season levels while weather remains excellent.
