On April 23, 1920, Turkey's Grand National Assembly (Türkiye Büyük Millet Meclisi) convened for the first time in Ankara, laying the constitutional foundation for the modern Turkish state. Mustafa Kemal Atatürk dedicated this day to the children of the world — making it the only national holiday on earth proclaimed in honor of children. Today it fills Istanbul with folk costumes, international youth delegations, flag ceremonies, and genuine national pride. If you're in Istanbul on or around April 23, you're in for a rich cultural experience.
