The Bosphorus strait divides Istanbul — and the world — between Europe and Asia, and the water is still the best seat in the city: palaces, fortresses and Ottoman mansions sliding past on both shores. The only real question is which boat. This guide covers all four ways onto the water, what each costs, where they leave from, and what you'll see along the way.
Four Ways onto the Water
- Public ferry (Şehir Hatları)
- ~€2. Scheduled commuter boats from Eminönü. The full round-trip to Anadolu Kavağı takes 6 hours with a 3-hour stopover; shorter runs cross the strait in under an hour. No commentary, no frills — and the best value sightseeing in Istanbul. Best for: Budget travellers with a free half-day
- Guided group boat
- €25–€40. Purpose-built tour boats from Eminönü and Kabataş with English commentary, multiple departures daily from 10:00. They stick to the scenic central Bosphorus — palaces, fortresses and both bridges in 1.5–2 hours. Best for: First-time visitors short on time
- Sunset dinner cruise
- Quote on request. The evening classic: a 3-hour cruise past the illuminated shoreline with a multi-course Turkish dinner, unlimited drinks and a live show — whirling dervish, belly dance and folklore band. Boards at Kabataş around 19:00. Best for: Couples and special occasions
- Private yacht charter
- Quote on request. Your own boat, captain and route for 2–12 guests. Choose a half-day charter or a full-day hire with catering and hostess service — priced on request. Wedding proposals on the water are a popular use case. Best for: Families, small groups, celebrations

Departure Piers & Getting There
Most cruises leave from central piers — Eminönü, Karaköy (Galata Port) and Kabataş on the European side, Üsküdar and Kadıköy on the Asian side. For the dinner cruise: Private pickup from your hotel about 45 minutes before boarding; boats leave from the European shore between Kabataş and Kuruçeşme.. If you're coming from the airport or a hotel outside the centre, a private transfer drops you exactly at the pier — no traffic guesswork, no luggage on the tram.
Best Time to Cruise
- April–June (Spring)
- Best weather, mild temperatures (15–22°C), tulips in bloom. Highly recommended.
- July–August (Summer)
- Peak season and hot (30–35°C). Book early; evening cruises dodge the midday heat.
- September–November (Autumn)
- Excellent — fewer crowds, comfortable temperatures, beautiful golden light.
- December–March (Winter)
- Atmospheric and uncrowded. Cold (5–10°C), but the misty Bosphorus is dramatic and unique.
Tips for Your Cruise
- Sit on the left side going north (the right side on the way back) — the European shore's palaces and mosques are on that side.
- Bring a light jacket even in summer; the Bosphorus breeze is cool on the water after sunset.
- The best photos of the Bosphorus Bridge come just after sunset, when the lights come on.
- Group boats sell same-day, but arrange dinner cruises and private charters 2–3 days ahead in May–September.
- Arrive 20–30 minutes before departure — boarding lines get long for group tours.
- The full ferry route to Anadolu Kavağı is an all-day trip; bring snacks or plan lunch at the village.
